Getting Our Cabling Right

A lot of people seem to be very interested in the renovations we did at Chilvester Hill and how we went about doing it. I can comment on my rose gardens and wood burning stoves, but when it comes to cabling, it’s the hubbies job, because he did it himself, mostly.

The majority of electrics were already setup so my main focus was on setting up telecommunications, media (TV etc.) and audio. For this I used Coax Cables. Coax cables, or coaxial cables, are cables used in telecommunications, especially in making modem connections from the Internet servers. Another wide area in which they are used is in carrying video and amplified audio signals to indoor and outdoor speakers especially for television channels.


Even the connection from the video or music system to the television will use a coax cable. Thus, it can be said that the major use of coax cables is in the area of telecommunications. These cables have two main conducting regions within them. At the center there is a thin cylindrical wire made up of copper. Coaxially around it, there is a copper cylinder, separated from the inner thin wire by an insulating medium known as the dielectric. The two conducting parts, i.e. the copper wire and the copper cylinder are thus coaxially mounted, and separated by a dielectric medium.

The whole thing is then sheathed in a jacket, which may contain thin copper wire mesh in it for added strength and conductivity. The jacked is usually braided to give it flexibility, but there are a lot of rigid coax cables also used, especially in making external connections, such as on telephonic poles.Since the two conducting regions are arranged coaxially, there is minimum interference between them, and the effective conducting area is only in the region between them, which is the insulating dielectric. As a result, the signals produced by the coax cables are totally free from any kind of interference, and are of the highest quality possible.

That explains the use of coax cables in carrying television and Internet signals from one place to another.What are Cat5 Cables?Cat5 cables, or Category 5 cables, are a standard for making cables. These are generally used in making Ethernet connections, such as connecting several computers to a patch panel, or connecting devices to a computer. Cat5 cables are made by making four pairs of insulated twisted wires, at a specific number of twists per inch. These four twisted pairs of wires are then passed through the outer jacket of the cable, with a core in the middle. These cables are UTP cables, where the acronym stands for Unshielded Twisted Pair.

These cables can typically carry 100 Mbps of Ethernet and Fast Ethernet data, and work up to a frequency of 100 MHz.The twisting ensures that the two wires in the pair cancel out the crosstalk interference produced by each other. This ensures that the data output is obtained without any distortion.What are Coax Cat5 Cable Converters?As their name suggests, coax Cat5 cable converters are devices that can convert signals from a typical audio visual environment that uses a coax cable to an Ethernet environment that uses a Cat5 cable.
